Who's a Nomad?
This installation in 2009 took place during the Long Weekend (the Tate Modern annual festival) whose theme was Arte Povera.
I am a New Zealander. I have followed and continued my art studies and made art projects in different countries, this has led me to identify myself with a nomadic sense of home, home being on my back (or in a packing case ready to be reinstalled). Belonging to a culture fixed by my birth but remade according to my needs, this questions my sense of tradition and my imaginative compilation of them in my travelling life. I am aware through my travels that there are many of us in this type of social contemporary nomadic existence. I would like to try and define what group we belong to and compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of this particular group.
Both Gypsies and Irish Travellers live within large kindred groups that provide for themselves a network, which acts to protect and support them. The contemporary social nomad has only a nuclear family, therefore what strategic decisions does this situation encourage them to make. How or what replaces the missing kindred network.
